Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church.
A husband has a great responsibly in a marriage; not only to provide for his wife and family, but something greater then that.
That responsibility is to speak into his wife’s heart and soul. He needs to…gets to…be the person to build her up! To lead her into a joyful and fulfilling life.
This is a big task. The idea that if I or you “do it wrong” then we will mess up our marriage and mess up our wives hearts.
The wonderful thing about Christ is that He gives you what you need to do it right. He will teach you and grow you into the man after His heart.
We will miss it, but when we are quick to repent and seek forgiveness; He will help us to walk in His ways. He wants us to be like Christ to our wives.
What does that mean to love my wife as Christ loved the church?
Lets look at Jesus’ life and how He interacted with people.
1. He was there for people. Whatever was going on He dropped what He was doing to help.
The man with demons (Mark 5:1-20) The woman with the issue of blood (Mark 5:24-34) The adulterous woman (John 8:1-11) Zacchaeus in the Tree (Luke 19:1-10)
Jesus was in the middle of going somewhere or doing something when He was stopped to take the time to help these people. When our wives need us, for whatever reason, we need to be like Jesus and stop and make them the priority.
2. Jesus didn’t wait to be needed. He made the first move.
The woman at the well (John 4:7-42) The crippled beggar (John 5:1-15) Zacchaeus in the Tree (Luke 19:1-10)
Jesus was aware of the people around Him. He listened to what the Holy Spirit was saying. When we listen the Holy Spirit will give us insight into or wives emotions. Relient k said in one of their songs, “someone get that girl a mood ring”. SO true! Women are a mystery, but their creator knows all about them. When we choose to learn from Him, then we will be able to see when our wives are hurting before they have to say something.
3. Jesus defended the weak.
The adulterous woman (John 8:1-11) Matthew’s party with other tax collectors (Matt. 9:9-13) The little children (Matt.19:14) The woman who anointed Jesus’ feet (Luke 7:36-50) Defending us before God (Heb. 7:25)
Jesus was and is the Great Protector. He was and is quick to rebuke those who stand in the way of the weak. He had their backs in those stories and He has your back before God…Every time you mess up…He lets God the Father know…”That’s covered…I took that for him too.” Standing up for our wives is sometimes hard. It may be easier to tell a “wife joke” along with the other guys or join in with the “check her out” comments. But when we do we aren’t defending their honor, but spitting on it. We need to have our wives backs whether they are around or not. I am not saying always tell her she is right in everything she says, but when someone is coming at her saying she is wrong about something; don’t just stand by or join the other person attacking your wife. She is counting on you to be there for her.
4. Lastly Jesus died for the church.
He died for everyone (John 19)
Jesus gave His life so we can have life. Are you willing to die for your wife? Now I hope a real life or death situation never comes up, but are you willing to die to self for your wife? That time when you had a hard day at work and all you want to do is sit and relax for awhile, but you get home and your wife also had a hard day and needs you. Are you willing to lay down your needs to meet hers? That is one way to give her your all, dying for her.
Are you MAN enough to Love your wife just like Christ loved the church?
When you let Jesus Christ create a new spirit inside you He will give you the courage and ability to Love her Best!
