What do you stand for?
Everyone will choose a side. Hamilton was talking to those Americans who didn’t want to help the revolution. But choosing to not help they were choosing to help the enemy.
What are your core motivations for doing anything? What is it that drives you forward? What burns you up on the inside? What can you not stop thinking about?
Is it love? Is it hope? Is it truth? Is it life? Is it joy? Is it fun? Is it fear? Is it anger?
Whatever it is deep down in the core of your being is who you really are. There are many things in this life that we could believe in, but that core belief is something more. Something you are willing to die for, give your time and money for.
When you don’t know what your core motivation is you will fall for anything.
Jesus illustrated this with this story.
The Wise and Foolish Builders
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
When your foundation isn’t ground on a firm foundation deeply routed within you; you will fall to the problems and other voices in life.
I have found that the only foundation for believing in anything is God. He is outside of time and space. He is love. He is good. He is just.
I stand on this…There is a God. From there I base all of my other beliefs. When those problems and voices come into my life I am able to look at my core understanding and say…
“There is a God. Therefore I will stand for the things He stands for.”
When I seek to stand for what He stands for I read His Word to know Him so I can know who I am. Those core beliefs are who I am.
Who are you? Take time to seek out what is your core motivation. Don’t look at what you stand for; look at what makes you stand for it. In one of Mewithoutyou’s songs they say,
“Good of our chaplain to sail Kalispell Bay
And now down on his marrow for this old fool to pray,
“Lord, for sixty-so years I’ve surrendered my love,
to emblems of kindness, and not the kindness they were emblems of,”
“Elephant In The Dock”
Those ideals you hold so dearly…Why? Your head may be in the right place, but your motivation isn’t grounded in something that will TRUELY last the test of EVERY storm.
God loves you and He wants to help you stand.
