Unfaithful to our God

While Ezra prayed and made this confession, weeping and lying face down on the ground in front of the Temple of God, a very large crowd of people from Israel—men, women, and children—gathered and wept bitterly with him. Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, a descendant of Elam, said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful to our God, for we have married these pagan women of the land. But in spite of this there is hope for Israel. Let us now make a covenant with our God to divorce our pagan wives and to send them away with their children. We will follow the advice given by you and by the others who respect the commands of our God. Let it be done according to the Law of God. Get up, for it is your duty to tell us how to proceed in setting things straight. We are behind you, so be strong and take action.”

Don’t take this the wrong way…God isn’t in favor of divorce.

What was happening here is the people of God where told not to marry the women of the land who worshiped false gods. They didn’t listen. In disobeying God they were inviting the worship of other gods into their homes and lives.

In this culture the sin of worshiping other gods looks much different. We may not be worshiping statues, sacrificing people, cutting ourselves or having sex with women to worship the gods, but what about the things that we just HAVE TO HAVE?

Those things that people line up for days to be the 1st in line to get. That house that is the biggest on the street. That car that goes 0-60 in “faster then yours!” That “perfect” family that everyone says, “oh aren’t you just adorable.”  Those VIP events.

Jesus said “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:21

There is nothing wrong with getting the new Iphone or having an awesome car. But is that where all of your focus and money is?

Just like the men in Ezra’s time, we need to take a look at our lives and see if any of the worldly pleasures/gods have taken over.

The bible is very clear that we are to love and honor Him before and above all else.

Exodus 20:3 “You must not have any other god but me.”

Matthew 22:37 “Jesus replied, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.”

Find those things that are holding you back from living in God’s blessing and divorce them. Another translation says, “So now let us make a covenant with our God to put away”. Put away all those things that are take God’s place as the Lord and King in your life. Give Him that 1st priority in your life and see how He will begin to work.

He has great things in store for you just as He did for Ezra, but 1st you need to…

“Rise up and Take courage and DO IT.”

God Bless!
