Giver of Good Gifts

Have you ever asked God for something?

Matthew 7:7 seems to say that if we ask God for it, no matter what it is, He will give it to us. If its material things, a new job, or relationships. If we ask it will be given to us.

That is what it says, but when you read what Jesus said next, we understand what He is really saying.

Matthew 7:7-12

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

As a dad, I totally understand where He is coming from. When my son asks for a drink I give him something to drink. When he asks for something to eat I get something for him. On the other hand, there are times when its not good for him to have to much to drink or eat. Saying no to ice cream 10 minutes before dinner; is still giving him a good gift. Even though he may not understand; eating dinner is much better then just eating ice cream.

Jesus is saying the same thing. When we ask He is always faithful to answer us, but sometime that door shouldn’t be opened yet…

Jesus, just like an earthly parent, can see the consequences down the road. That job that you want so badly, may be perfect for you, but you may not be ready for it. If you started that job, but weren’t prepared for it. You could easily start to feel that its not the right place for you.

Jesus knows what to give and when to give it. Trust Him when He says, “you have to eat your dinner first, then you will be ready for the ice cream.”

Keep asking and seeking His good gifts in life, but don’t grumble and complain with where you are in life right now. Those dreams you have will come to pass. And when you reach those dreams…Dream again.

Ephesians 3:20-21

Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.

God Bless!
